SURF'SUP REHEARSALS
I grew up in the 60-70s in So Cal. Body surfed from Zuma to Manhattan and vacationed at San Clemente State Park. Blew my mind when I was 7 and first heard The Ventures' Walk Don't Run. Gorged myself on Surfaris, Chantays, Atlantics, Bel-Airs...and watching Beach Blanket Bingo!
So here I am 60 years later Riding The Riffs with Mike, Alli, and Eric.
After learning to surf in Hawaii while living there for over 20 years, I kind of already had surf songs breaking in my head. It was like I had somehow tuned in to surf radio in my mind just by being out in the surf on a board. More often than not - whenever I heard music blasting through a radio on the beach - it was reggae or some sort of Hawaiian inspired music. One day, Dick Dale came ripping through a speaker upwind from my beach towel. It was immediately familiar to me. It was the soundtrack that was playing in my mind while out there on the waves. This was my introduction to surf rock. This is me playing an antique Martin ukulele at a music store on the island of Kaua’i.
Growing up in Ohio, my love for surf music was ignited as a kid after watching Dead Man’s Curve, in the 1970s about Jan and Dean, which only grew stronger with the phenomenal surf music soundtrack of Pulp Fiction decades later. The song "Rumble" by Link Wray and the Wraymen resonates deeply with my soul, and playing it live alongside other amazing surf hits with talented musicians from SurfsUp has sparked a newfound passion of drumming within me 🤘🏼
I'm 52. I started playing bass when I was around 18. I was in a few bands back in the day. I played in a pink band called Picker Factor, a metal band with a terrible name I don't want to say (haha), a rock band called the Bille Relmes band, and a rock band called Four Heavy Days.
When I was in the metal band I was interviewed on KISW Metal Shop so that was cool.
Around the age of 26 I got married and had a kid. There wasn't much time for weekly practice and shows so I quit and sold all of my stuff.
Fast forward to the age of 50 when I decided to pick it back up. Until I met Brennan, I had been in and out of bands trying to get something going but it never panned out.
